Error " SLS error XML return from engine that was invalid" (4260522)

Whilsttrying to restore a database from multiple backup files using LiteSpeed Stored Procedure xp_restore_database, the operation fails with the above error message.Executing xp_restore_verify only on the files returns a valid response; The backup set on file 1 is valid.
There are no mapped drives involved and the user account has sufficient privilege to initialise the LiteSpeed Engine.
There are VDI timeouts evident in the LiteSpeed log file and also multiple Read/write failures in between each block being read, affecting a large numbers of blocks.
The SQL Error logs show Disk timeouts errors containing SQL Server has encountered 1 occurrence(s) of I/O requests taking longer
than 15 seconds to complete on file and read failure on backup device.
