When selecting older versions of backup software for emulation in Recovery Manager for Exchange (RME) one is not prompted to enter server name but in more recent versions a prompt is received for server name. Why?
There were no changes made to this functionality between RME 4.8 and 4.9. When VSS backups are being restored RME needs information from AD about the Exchange server being restored. The only difference between 4.8 and 4.9 is that more backup vendors started creating VSS backups (the only possible backup of Exchange 2010) hence the need to prompt for server name. This has become an issue in cases where the server name is no longer on available on the network.
With RME 5.0 there is now the functionality to emulate even a server which is no longer on the network (after being damaged, decommissioned, etc)
