Description: Prerequisites for adding a library from a Netware Smart Client
Symptoms: A library has been added to a Netware machine which should now work as a SmartClient, but it is not shown when trying to add it in Device Management.
A library that is locally connected to a Netware machine can be used for backups by a NetVault server. The Netware machine then becomes a SmartClient.
This works differently than when using a regular NetVault client on Windows, Linux etc. - the Netware machine will only have an NLM loaded, which is essentially an NDMP daemon that the NetVault server talks to through its Thin Client Plugin for Netware.
Therefore, in order for any library to be shown, the Netware server must be added to the Thin Client Plugin as per the plugin's documentation. Additionally, while adding it, the "Locally Attached Devices" checkbox needs to be ticked.
When you now double-click on the main NetVault server in "Add Library", this will not only result in the server's devices being shown, but also for the server to talk to that Netware SmartClient through NDMP, and listing its local devices under the "NDMP Robotic" trees.
If you still can't see or add the devices, make sure that you have followed the steps in the manual, NW.1.1b:
- netvault.nlm loaded
- nwaspi.cdm /LUN loaded
- exatape.cdm, scsi2tp.cdm, dlttape.cdm renamed
Additionally, ensure that nwtape.cdm isn't loaded either, as this tends to acquire devices, and that the library and drives are not on SCSI target ID 0 - NetWare only expects hard disks on that target.
