Title: Netvault database backup hangs
NV Version: all
OS Version: all
Description:
Netvault database backup is hanging
Symptoms:
The NetVault database backup starts backing up files but hangs midway through backing up the files/folders.

N.B. BAKBONE RECOMMENDS THAT YOU PERFORM A DAILY BACKUP OF YOUR NETVAULT DATABASE
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If the NetVault database backup hangs, the most common reason is some corruption in one of the files being backed up.
In order to diagnose this, send the binary log of the database backup to the BakBone technical support team.
It will then be diagnosed using the following troubleshooting method:
1)
We check what is the last message in the backup log before it started to hang.
2)
If the last message says 'Backed up ', then it is likely to be the NEXT file to be backed up which is corrupted.
If the last message says 'Backing up ', then it is likely to be THIS file being backed up which is corrupted.
Attached to this guide you will see the log for a successful database backup in NetVault 7.4, showing the order in which the files are backed up.
Pre-7.4 versions of NetVault are similar but may not be identical.
3)
In either case, we will ask you to move/rename the file/folder which we suspect is corrupted.
*You will need to restart the NetVault service on the server in order for this change to take effect.*
4)
Then you restart the NetVault service.
If the NetVault service doesn't start, then we ask you to return the file/folder to its original location & name and we will investigate further.
5)
If the NetVault service starts OK and the database backup runs succesfully, then we have diagnosed that the file/folder was corrupted.
At this point, we will need to let you know what information was stored in the file/folder and discuss how important it was and what opportunities we have to recover that information.
Ideally you would have a daily database from which we can restore the corrupted information (see recommendation at top).
6)
If the NetVault service starts OK but the database backup still doesn't run correctly, or if the NetVault service doesn't start OK, then you will restore the
NetVault installation to its original state by returning the file/folder to its previous location and name and we will investigate further.
