Description:
When tracing of a process is required, usually in relation to a support request, it may not be possible to restart the NetVault services to enable global tracing. Using the nvpview application, it is possible to set tracing on individual, running, processes.
Locate and run the nvpview application. The default location is <NetVault Installation Directory>\bin\nvpview.
The top window is the Process List. Highlight the process that requires tracing, set the trace level radio-button to “Library Verbose” and click the ‘Start’ Trace button. Repeat for any other processes, and click ‘Stop’ when tracing is no longer required.
You can also see the contents of the trace buffer for the highlighted process in the Trace Buffer Window. The buffer holds the latest messages for the process (also written to file). The size of the buffer is configurable, and holds 7Kb of messages by default.
Note that this is only possible for running processes. Some backup jobs will call additional processes, for example Device Manager processes. Tracing will not occur on these additional processes. If a trace of one of these additional processes is required, then quickly set the trace level and start tracing before the process ends.
