Description:
Communications error when trying to open the GUI to control Snap server.
You can get this error for several reasons.
1. The NetVault License is expired or no longer valid.
2. The NetVault service isn’t running
3. There is a firewall blocking communciations
Symptoms:
Communications Error
1. Open a command window on the NetVault server execute su and go to where NetVault is installed.
su
cd /hd/vol_mnt0/BakBone/NetVault
If you don’t know where it is installed run this command.
cat /etc/.nv6_home
Then change to the util directory and run nvlicenseinfo
cd util
./nvlicenseinfo
Near the bottom of the output you will see something like this.

If the applied keys section is empty or doesn’t contain a server license, this is the reason for your error. Make sure you have your license installed in the Snap appliance GUI.
2. Open a command window on the NetVault server, execute su, and run ps -ef |grep nv
su
ps -ef |grep nv
There should be about 8 processes listed. If you don’t, the service isn’t started.
In the snap appliance GUI, go to SnapExtentions, click on BakBone NetVault. Uncheck enable and click ok. Then check enable and click ok.
3. Make sure any firewall on the computer you are running the NetVault GUI on, or any firewalls on the way to the snap server are disabled.
