Solution Details Date - 12/2010
Affected Product & Version - NetVault: Backup 8.5.0 and above.
Affected Module & Version - APM for Microsoft SQL Server (Version 5.5 and up)
OS Version - Windows 2000/2003/2008
Application Information - SQL Server 2000/2005/2008
Description:
When Configuring the SQL Server APM for a Server that contains both SQL 2000 and SQL 2005/2008 you get the following error:
Unable to connect to SQL Instance.
Check that it is online and the login details are correct.
This SQL Instance will not be added for browsing until the above error is resolved.
Symptoms:
If both SQL Server 2000 and SQL Server 2005/2008 instances co-exist on a SQL Server, the SQL Server APM will display only the SQL Server 2005/2008 instances by default. In this mixed environment, to configure the SQL Server 2000 instances, you must first remove all SQL Server 2005/2008 instances from NVBU, and then add the SQL Server 2000 instances.
When adding back the Server 2000 instance, you will get the error:
Unable to connect to SQL Instance.
Check that it is online and the login details are correct.
This SQL Instance will not be added for browsing until the above error is resolved.
The error message is incorrect and it will be removed in a future release.
The workaround at the moment is to disregard the error and:
Click on OK to close the error pop/up window.
Exit from the 'Backup' window.
Then from NVBU console, click on the 'Backup' Icon again.
Double click on the SQL Server name.
You will now see both Instances. The SQL Server 2000 and whatever other combination was correctly configured above, SQL Server 2005 or SQL Server 2008.
