Description:
Some Unix based machines do not offer a graphical interface and prevent users from running nvgui or nvconfigurator locally.
If Domain Management of such machines is not an option, a solution would be to simply open nvgui on another machine.
The steps below allow you to achieve this task:
If the displaying machine is Windows you will need 2 utilities:
X-win32 and Putty for Windows.
Note that there are plenty of other applications that would serve the same purpose:
[1] From the Windows box open Putty to start an ssh session to the Host machine (the one without GUI)
[2] From the Windows machine, start Xwin32 and to the 'Security' Tab and add the Host IP address
[3] Back to Putty on the Windows box, type the following in the terminal session open for the host machine:
> DISPLAY=IP(my machine/windows):0.0
> export DISPLAY
[4] Once the DISPLAYenvironment variable has been declared and exported, you can now start nvgui or other graphical applications by typing:
nvgui
or find the xterm utility on that unix machine if you want to open other applications, the xterm utility is generally found here:
/usr/X11R6/bin/xterm (for RHE)
/usr/openwin/bin/xterm (for Solaris)
If your machine is a Unix/Linux:
[1]Simply open a Terminal session and type:
ssh –X
The -X switch allows to connect via ssh while permitting the transport of X elements.
[2] Once the ssh session is open with the host machine just type 'nvgui' to bring up the NetVault GUI.
