Creating a new Media database on an existing NetVault server (4045223)

Creating a new Media database on an existing NetVault server when you will not be restoring the Media database from tape, and will be starting over with a new Media Database. To populate the database, you will be scanning in previously-written tapes or starting over with a new database.
The Media Database contains records of all active media, the contents of all backups, how backups are organized, the and where they are located.

Prior to creating the new database:

1. Unload any tapes that are currently loaded in any of the tape drives (virtual and physical)
2. Get a screen shot of the NetVault Console/Device Management screen showing all libraries and names of libraries.
3. Gather serial numbers and the block size of physical drives in the library (go to Device Management; right click each drive).
4. In the Nvconfigurator/General Tab, note where the Media database is located.

To create the new Media database:

1. Stop the NetVault service (Nvconfigurator/Service tab).
2. Rename the existing 'MediaDatabase' in the filesystem (see step 4 above for location). For example
   # mv /usr/netvault/db/MediaDatabase /usr/netvault/db/oldMediaDatabase
3. Restart the NetVault service (Nvconfigurator/Service tab). 
4. Launch the NetVault Console, Device Management.
5. You may be prompted to 'auto configure' the libraries. Go ahead and use 'auto configure' on the libraries, then verify the serial number and block size for each drive (reference step 3 above).
6. Add any libraries (use the same name as before, otherwise you may need to modify existing jobs) that were not 'auto configured', again then verify the serial number and block size for each drive (reference step 3 above).

Optionally, at this point, you can procede to scan all NetVault media to populate the new MediaDatabase with existing data.
