Title: How to backup and restore the schedule database
Date: June 2007
NV Version: 7.x
OS Version: Any
Application version: NA
Plugin version: NA
Description: Instructions for restoring a clean Netvault Database Schedule Database only.
Symptoms:
Choose a time to perform this task when no backups are running.
If the Netvault Server is still running correctly:
1. Perform a full Netvault Database backup (we only need the schedule database, but for the safety take an entire backup).
2. Stop the Netvault Services, check that there are no stray Netvault Processes running.
3. Move the directory ~NetVault\db\ScheduleDatabase to a safe location outside of the ~netvault directory. Note this is a move and not a copy.
4. Restart the Netvault Services, this will create a new empty Schedule Database
5. Create a restore job that restores ONLY the SCHEDULE MANAGER from the backup you have just taken. This is very important.
6. The job should run and restore the Schedule Database element of the NVDB. Then Netvault will appear to crash.
7. Restart the Netvault service.
If the Netvault Server is not running correctly:
1. Ensure you have a recent safe copy of a Netvault Database backup available.
2. Ensure that the Netvault Services are not running and there are no stray Netvault processes.
3. Move the directory ~NetVault\db\ScheduleDatabase to a safe location outside of the ~netvault directory. Note this is a move and not a copy.
4. Restart the Netvault Services, this will create a new empty Schedule Database
5. Create a restore job based on your safe copy of the NVDB backup that restores ONLY the SCHEDULE MANAGER. This is very important.
6. The job should run and restore the Schedule Database element of the NVDB. Then Netvault will appear to crash.
7. Restart the Netvault service.
Note. Restoring a schedule database only is safe and will not result in the loss of backup information or licenses.
Explanation
The schedule database holds the backup schedule information used to control the Netvault Jobs. This includes the job definitions and information about the instances of the jobs. In the normal operation of Netvault, when schedules or jobs are removed, "holes" are created in the database as it does not compress itself. The process of backing up and restoring the schedule database will remove these holes and in many cases will shrink the size of the Netvault Database.
In some cases where there are problems with the schedule database, an internal link may be missing and the backup and restore of the database can restore the links. However, in extreme cases, if the Schedule database is corrupted the only solution is to restore to a previously saved "safe" copy of the database. In this case any schedule changes made since the safe backup will be lost. Note also that restoring to an older version of the schedule database will result in any jobs which were scheduled to run in the intervening time will start automatically and will have to be manually aborted. If any of these jobs have prescripts that shutdown databases, isolate the Netvault Server first by disabling the network.
