Description:
There are a number of MAPI limits, designed to prevent a single client from the exhausting resources on the Exchange server. When one or more of these limits are met during a mailbox restore job, then emails in the mailbox after the limit will fail to restore.
Symptoms:
There are 2 errors per mail that fails to restore:
The 1st error is "Mapi: 'Unspecified error'", double click the error to view the context:
-----------------------------------
Mapi Error Message Details
Error message code:
0x80004005 MAPI_E_CALL_FAILED
Error message text:
Unspecified error
Mapi Call:
ptTargetMsg->lpVtbl->SaveChanges( ptTargetMsg, FORCE_SAVE | KEEP_OPEN_READWRITE)
-----------------------------------
The second error is "Failed to set marker property of restore item. Future restores will not correctly identify this item" for the first failed mail, or "Failed to save changes to restored item" for subsequent mails. The context of the error identifies the mail that fails to restore.
The final message for the restore will show something like:
"Restore tally for job : 3 folders processed (0 restored), 1243 other items processed (712 restored)"
Indicating that some mails are restored, and some are not.
The MAPI limits can be over-ridded by Registry settings on the Exchange Server. Further details can be found in Microsoft Knowledge Base article 830829
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;830829 (06/08)
There should be an error message in the Application Event Viewer log on the Exchange Server indicating the limit that was met.
