Description:
This article raises the problem of client backup jobs failing following an upgrade to Netvault version 8.0.
Symptoms:
Following an upgrade to NetVault 8.0, some client backups immediately fail with a "Channel error".
These jobs use to work perfectly before, but the upgrade seemed to have led to an immediate failure of some
client backup jobs.
A reinstallation of NetVault to the previous version (7.4.x) fixes the issue and the same exact jobs finish
successfully. This is valid for both clients under NetVault 7.4.x and NetVault 8.0.
This proves that the upgrade is behind this sudden failure.
The log shows the following error messages few seconds after start:
Error 2007/10/31 14:27:40 119 Media UKW UKW C:\StandAlone1G: had channel error
the log context shows:
NET :4088 71 10053 142740 Fatal error during TCP receive: Connection aborted due to timeout or other failure
DATA :4088 103 -1 142740 Error reading buffer contents
MEDWRITE:4088 190 1 142740 Device write data in: FAILURE
After investigation, it was determined that the use of the "Network Compression" option in the Advanced Options tab was causing the failure.
Apparently NetVault 8.0 cannot perform backups with this option selected.
Deselecting it results in the same backups finishing successfully.
This is a fault that has already been reported to our R&D under the reference NVG-4028.
- Check the job to see if the "Network Compression" option in the Advanced Option is selected
- if it is selected, please click 'modify' and deselect the Network Compression option.
- you will have to do so on all jobs using network compression until a fix is released.
