BMR Online backups for Windows, fail with the following log message:

The newer version of BMR Online for Windows, 3.5 and greater, introduce a new Backup Option: "Select All VSS Writers" (selected by default).
With this option selected, all the VSS writers present on the system will be used to produce snapshots, including snapshots of the relevant applications.
In some case as the above, Exchange 2007 data are hosted on NetApp LUNs mapped to the client to backup.
The OS will subsequently fail any attempt to produce a VSS snapshot using the Exchange Writer on a non local drive.
The client's Event Application logs will show a reason why the writer failed. In this one example, it shows NetApp filer served network volume errors preventing VSS snapshots:

An attempt to delete Snapshot copy '{38b442d2-e31d-45b9-a116-cf0ed9a6cbbb}' of the 'vol_exch' volume failed on the storage system 'netapp1'.

An attempt to get list of initiator groups and their members (the initiators) mapped to the LUN:
/vol/vol_exch_logs/exch_logs failed on the storage system netapp2.
Error description: No such LUN existsDuring VaultDR Online backups, the plugin requests VSS snapshots of the selected drives. This will allow for a consistent backup to be taken.
To workaround the VSS writer problem, use the default VSS writer only.
