Title: Cannot open Network Shares node in File System plugin 7.0
Date: 01/03/07
NV Version: 7.4 and higher
OS Version: All
Application version: N/A
Plugin version: File System 7.0
Description:
The new File System plugin 7.0 has the ability to backup network shares but it does not work in the same way as the "Fixed Drives" and "Removable Drives" nodes.
This FAQ explains why this is and how to use it.
Symptoms:
Double clicking on the "Network Shares" option in the File System plugin 7.0 does not open up a list of shares available to backup as would be expected. This is due to technical limitations.
Rather than double clicking it is necessary to right click on the "Network Shares" node and select "Add Network Share". You must then manually enter the server name and share name as a UNC (Universal Naming Convention) path. For example if there is a share called "Public" on machine called "CORPSERV" then the notation would be "\\CORPSERV\Public".
Furthermore if the network share requires authentication you must right click on the newly created share and select "Connect As" and enter your authentication credentials here.
Network Share Backup Defined (Windows-based O/S ONLY)
Windows-based installations of the File System Plugin (i.e.,version 7.0.20 and later) allow you to access shared drives and directories across the network in order to include their data in a backup. This is useful in environments in which a Windows-based system is accessible on the network, but it does not have the Client version of NetVault installed.
