Error booting after successfully restoring a Generation 2 Hyper-V UEFI - BSOD "Critical Process Died"

You have successfully exported a Windows 2012 protected server with a UEFI/Secure Boot configuration. On booting up, you keep getting BSOD with error message "Critical Process Died" and the only option is to reset the VM. You have confirmed all volumes are correctly set with the right attributes using DiskPart. You have tried to rebuild BCD, verified disks are GPT and contain recovery and EFI partitions but the VM does not boot successfully.

You may want to restore the registry on the VM. Corrupt registry may cause a machine not to boot properly.

NOTE:

There is a difference when restoring the registry from in Windows 2012 compared to older Operating Systems. The folder C:\Windows\System32\Config\Regback holds a backup to C:\Windows\System32\Config on later operating system versions.

Please complete the following steps to boot the machine from a stable registry:

A: Boot into Windows Recovery Environment command prompt as follows:

In order to use the Windows Recovery Environment Command Prompt tools, follow these steps:

1. Configure the BIOS to ensure the computer is to start from the CD\DVD or USB drive.
2. Boot to a Windows Server 2012 CD\DVD or copy of the Windows 2012 source files on a bootable USB.
3. Restart the computer and boot to the Windows Server 2012 CD\DVD or the applicable USB containing Windows 2012 source files and launch a normal Windows 2012 Server installation process (setup.exe file etc.)
4. When the Windows Setup Screen appears, select English\UK settings.
5. As the Install Windows Setup Screen continues, select "Repair your computer".
6. Choose "Troubleshoot" on the next screen.
7. Choose "Command Prompt" on the Advanced Options screen.
8. At the command prompt, type the appropriate Recovery Environment commands to repair your Windows Server 2012 installation.

B: Copy and replace Registry Items as follows:

1. Enter the commands below:

copy c:\windows\system32\config\sam c:\windows\tmp\sam.bak
copy c:\windows\system32\config\security c:\windows\tmp\security.bak
copy c:\windows\system32\config\default c:\windows\tmp\default.bak

delete c:\windows\system32\config\system
delete c:\windows\system32\config\software
delete c:\windows\system32\config\sam
delete c:\windows\system32\config\security
delete c:\windows\system32\config\default

copy C:\Windows\System32\Config\Regback\system c:\windows\system32\config\system
copy C:\Windows\System32\Config\Regback\software c:\windows\system32\config\software
copy C:\Windows\System32\Config\Regback\sam c:\windows\system32\config\sam
copy C:\Windows\System32\Config\Regback\security c:\windows\system32\config\security
copy C:\Windows\System32\Config\Regback\default c:\windows\system32\config\default

NOTE: drive "x" above may be letter d or some other letter depending on how many drives you have. Also check drive c for the "repair" folder.

4. Type “exit” to leave the Recovery Console and restart your computer.
