How to Add Machines to Protection (4040393)

This KB details the steps necessary to add a Machine, Cluster, or Machines to protection.

• Agent Machines:
  • Credentials for Agents that provide full local administrator rights to severs being protected
  • Supported Agent software is already installed on the machine and the machine has been rebooted. Or…
  • Windows machines only, if the machine is reachable, the Agent software will be pushed out, installed, and the Agent will be protected after reboot.
• Agentless Machines:
  • Credentials for vCenter / ESX9(i) host
  • vCenter / ESX9(i) host must be reachable
  • Option is only available under Protect Multiple Machines. See

Steps:

Protecting a Machine:

1. Open the Core Console, click the Protect drop-down menu and then click Protect Machine. The Protect Machine Wizard opens
2. Welcome page: Select one of the following options. Click Next.
   • Typical: The repository is chosen for you.
   • Advanced: You can choose which repository to assign to an Agent, create a repository if none are in place, and apply encryption if desired
3. Connection page: Enter the host name / IP and credentials of machine. Click Next.
4. Warnings page: Any warnings will be posted here. Correct as necessary or ignore. Click Next.
   • NOTE: If protecting a Windows machine that does not have Agent software installed, the Core will push the installer to the server, install, reboot, and protect the machine, as long as the machine is reachable.
5. Protection page: You may change the Display Name if desired, and choose to keep Default protection or apply Custom protection. Click Next.
   • Volumes page (Custom protection only): Choose volumes to protect. Click Next.
   • Schedule page (Custom protection only): Set custom protection schedule. Click Next.
6. Repository page (Advanced only): Choose an existing repository to store protected data or create a new repository, click Next.
7. Encryption page (Advanced only): Enable encryption if desired, apply an existing key or create a new one if needed.
8. Click Finish.

Protecting a Cluster:

1. Open the Core Console, click the Protect drop-down menu and then click Protect Cluster. The Connect to Cluster dialog box opens.
2. In the Connect to Cluster dialog box, enter the following information, and click Connect.
   • Host: The host name or IP address of the cluster, the cluster application, or one of the cluster nodes.
   • Port: The port number on the machine on which the Rapid Recovery Core communicates with the Agent. The default port is 8006.
   • User name: The domain name and domain administrator account used to connect to the cluster. For example, domain\username.
   • Password: Password for the domain administrator account.
     • NOTE: The domain name is mandatory. You cannot connect to the cluster using the local administrator user name.
3. In the Protect Cluster dialog box:
   • Select a repository for this cluster.
   • If you want to secure the recovery points for this cluster using Core-based encryption, select an encryption key.
   • If you do not want protection to begin immediately after completing this procedure, select Initially pause protection.
   • To protect the cluster based on default settings, select the nodes for default protection, and then go to Step 4.
     • NOTE: The default settings schedule a snapshot of all volumes every 60 minutes.
   • To enter custom settings for the cluster (for example, to customize the protection schedule for the shared volumes), do one of the following:
     • For individual nodes:
       • Click Settings next the node, a Protection Settings dialog box will open.
       • Click Edit to apply a custom protection schedule or Template.
         • Select Apply to all volumes if you wish to apply to all volumes on the node.
       • Click OK to apply and close Protection Schedule dialogue box, repeat for each node as you see fit.
       • Click Save to when finished to close Protection Settings dialog box.
     • For cluster volumes:
       • Click Settings at the bottom of the dialog box, a Protection Settings dialog box will open.
       • Click Edit to apply a custom protection schedule or Template.
         • Select Apply to all volumes if you wish to apply to all volumes on the node.
       • Click OK to apply and close Protection Schedule dialogue box, repeat for each node as you see fit.
       • Click Save to when finished to close Protection Settings dialog box.
4. Click Protect.

Protecting Multiple Machines:

1. Open the Core Console, click the Protect drop-down menu and then click Protect Multiple Machines. The Protect Multiple Machines Wizard opens.
2. Welcome page: Select one of the following options. Click Next.
   • Typical: The repository is chosen for you.
   • Advanced: You can choose which repository to assign to an Agent, create a repository if none are in place, and apply encryption if desired.
3. Connection page: Choose how you wish to select machines to protect. Click Next.
   • Active Directory: Enter Active Directory host and domain administrator credentials to access Active Directory.
     • NOTE: This will list every machine in your Active Directory.
   • vCenter / ESX(i): Enter host and administrator credentials to access VMware host.
     • To use agentless protection, select Use Rapid Snap for Virtual host-based protection. See Protecting multiple machines on a VMware vCenter/ESX(i) virtual host using Agentless Protection for more detailed information.
     • NOTE: This will list VMs by Host and Clusters or VMs and Templates view.
   • Hyper-V Server or Hyper-V Cluster: Enter host and administrator credentials to access the Hyper-V host.
     • To use agentless protection, select Use Rapid Snap for Virtual host-based protection. See Protecting Hyper-V Guests using Agentless Protection with Rapid Recovery for more detailed information.
   • Manually: Manually enter machines to be protected.
     • NOTE: This is your best option for protecting Agents on other domains or workgroups.
   • Warnings page (Protect selected VMs Agentlessly only): The Core will verify the target host is running a compatible version required for agentless protection.
4. Select Machines page:
   • Active Directory and vCenter / ESX(i): Select machines you with to protect. Click Next.
   • Manually :Enter the list of machines with username and password. Click Next.
   • Adjustments page (vCenter / ESX(i) only): Add username and password to each machine listed. Click Next.
     • NOTE: Local administrator credentials are needed for Agent software to be paired to Core.
   • Warnings page: Any warnings will be posted here. Correct as necessary or ignore. Click Next.
     • NOTE: If protecting a Windows machine that does not have Agent software installed, the Core will push the installer to the server, install, reboot, and protect the machine, as long as the machine is reachable.
5. Protection page: Choose to keep Default protection or apply Custom protection. Click Next.
   • Schedule page (Custom protection only): Set custom protection schedule. Click Next.

7. Encryption page (Advanced only): Enable encryption if desired, apply an existing key or create a new one if needed.
8. Click Finish.
