Questions regarding Federation communication:

2. What type of communication is performed on port 1099 and 4444?
3. What are ports 1099 and 4444 used for?

The default Federation setup does not use a secure connection.  SSL communication can be configured.  Configuring SSL communications is described under the "Security Settings" section of the Federation Field guide.

Port 1099 and port 4444 are used for RMI (Remote Method Invocation) communication.  RMI is the Java version of a remote procedure call (RPC), but with the ability to pass one or more objects along with the request.

Port 1099 is the default port for RMI registry for object lookups.

Port 4444 is used as the RMI service port.
