To retrieve the mailbox delegate information used in the Mailbox Delegates report, Messagestats does the following:
(Exchange 2000+)
1. Enumerate the mailbox table for the target server.
2. For each mailbox in the mailbox table, get the legacy Exchange DN.
3. Look up the Active Directory object that is identified by the legacy Exchange DN.
4. Bind to the Active Directory object identified by the legacy Exchange DN and retrieve its publicDelegates attribute.
The publicDelegates attribute contains the array of delegates that are used in the Mailbox Delegates report.
For Exchange 5.5 the process is similar, the main differences being that Messagestats queries against Exchange Directory and lookup the Public-Delegates attribute.
