Offboard Backup Transfer Settings and Errors Troubleshooting -

With the KACE SMA Version 9.0/9.1, a new feature for Offboard Backups automatically was added. The new feature includes Offboard through FTP, SFTP and Samba.
This article will provide steps on how to troubleshoot Offboard Backup settings and offboarding errors.

Note: Click on Test to verify the setup, this will notify and clear the settings not saved. To keep current settings, please click on Save.
Offboard Backup Transfer Settings
When the setup is complete, clicking on Test should result in a successful notification. This will transfer a test file to the desired Offboard Location. The smb_test.txt file can be found in the specified Shared folder.
Offboard Backup Test Success
The shared folder should now have a test file located after a successful test.
Samba errors during Offboard test
If the following errors are encountered while testing a setup, please review the backup settings.
Clicking on Test produces a “Failed: Unknown Error”
Cause: This means it was not able to access the the Shared folder through samba. During the test process the KACE SMA will offboard an smb_test.txt file. If the SMA can’t find the Path it will return Unknown Error.
Resolution: Enter only the Shared folder Name. Do not use the UNC for the shared folder.
Note: if needing to drill down to a specific location use the Main Shared Folder directory and drill. UNC is not required.
When clicking on Test results in a “session setup failed: NT_STATUS_LOGON_FAILURE”
Cause: This means the credentials are not correct or authentication issues.
Resolution: Please verify the username and password. If using a different authentication method please confirm the SMA uses the same.
Note: Remember to use Domain\Username format.
When clicking on Test results in a “Connection to X.X.X.X failed (Error NT_STATUS_IO_TIMEOUT)”
Cause: This means there is no access to the Server set for the Offboard.
Resolution: Please verify network for access to the specific Server.
Samba errors during Offboard process
If the following errors are encountered when running a backup, please review backup settings.
The Offboard Transfer settings can be saved without testing. If this is the case, the KACE SMA will not verify/test the Offboard process until a Backup is ran on schedule or on demand. Errors might be encountered if settings have not been verified prior to saving.
Samba Unknown Error during Offboard_backup

Samba Connection Error during Offboard_backup

Resolution: Verification of network access of the specific Server will be necessary. Wrong Server.
Samba Session error during Offboard_backup

Resolution: Enter correct credentials with access to Shared Folder.
Samba Status Error during Offboard_backup

Resolution: Select different location or allocate more space to Microsoft Shared Folder Location.
Samba Disk Full Error during Offboard_backup

Resolution: Allocate more space to Shared Folder Location.
Samba Internal Error during Offboard_backup

Resolution: Select a different Share Folder location.

Offboard Backup Transfer FTP Settings
When the setup is complete and another Test is run, it should get a success Notification for FTP server connection. The protocol for FTP will need to be set; Set the Server IP Address and the Path or Share Name.
Note: FTP Offboard test will NOT create a test file. Don't expect to see this test file in the FTP Folder.
FTP errors during Offboard test
If the following errors are encountered while testing setup, please review the settings for FTP or SFTP.
Successful FTP Offboard Test
Resolution: Successful FTP Server connection
Note: FTP Offboard test will NOT create a test file. Don't expect to see thsi test file in the FTP Folder.
When clicking on Test results in “FTP file create failed”
Cause: This means the wrong path or Share Name is set.
Resolution: Set the correct path or Sharename with the exact directory. Whenever the location is not found, KACE SMA will inform with FTP file creation failed.
Note: The root folder is established as "\" which can be used as the root ftp folder.
Note: In addition a subfolder can be created in root for a more specific path. ie. SMABckp
When clicking on Test results in “Error: Could not connect to FTP Server”
Cause: This means there is no FTP access to the server or wrong Server.
Resolution: Set a functional FTP Server with port 21 listening.
Note: Test the FTP Server prior to configuring in KACE SMA Offboad. A Browser or FTP Client can be used to verify connectivity.
When clicking on Test results in “Error: Could not connect to FTP Server”
Cause: This means there is an issue with credentials used.
Resolution: Set the correct username and password.
Note: If an MS IIS FTP Server is set, Domain\Username format is recommended.
FTP errors during Offboard process
If following errors are encountered when running a backup, please review the settings.
Errors might be encountered if settings are not properly set prior to testing.
FTP Error: FTP /Folder not found during Offboard_backup

Resolution: Enter only the FTP desired location Name. Wrong Path or Share Name. Only input the Folder within FTP that's addressed for Backups.
FTP Error: Could not connect to FTP Server during Offboard_backup
