- The app originally shows the iPad-supported badge in the KACE Cloud app catalog and installs successfully on managed iPads.
- After the vendor releases a new version, or KACE Cloud Syncs VPP, the iPad badge disappears, and push attempts to iPads fail (error: “device unsupported”).
- The same app continues to install on iPhones because the “iPhone” flag is still present.
- This pattern may occur with any app/device combination and across the App Store.

Causa
- Incorrect App Store metadata – The latest build was uploaded to App Store with an incomplete Targeted Device Families setting (e.g., only “iPhone” instead of “iPhone, iPad”). This is visible in the VPP JSON under
"deviceFamilies": ["iphone"]. - VPP sync – KACE Cloud automatically refreshes VPP data (typically every few hours) and overwrites its cached entry.
- Platform validation – When “iPad” is missing, KACE Cloud removes the iPad icon and blocks installs/updates on iPadOS devices by design.

Step Action 1 Export the VPP metadata and confirm deviceFamilieslists only"iphone".2 Open a ticket with the app vendor and provide Apple’s guideline: Xcode – Targeted Device Families.
Request a rebuild that the app includes device support (i.e “iPad”) in the target list.3 After Apple approves the corrected build, in KACE Cloud force a VPP sync (Settings ▶ Apple Settings Apple Volume Purchase Program ▶ Sync Now) or wait for the next automatic sync. 4 In KACE Cloud Verify the iPad badge has returned in the app catalog, then push the app to iPad devices as usual. -

When an iOS/iPadOS application suddenly becomes “unsupported” for iPads (or any other Apple device family), the first checkpoint is the VPP metadata. If the target family flag is missing, only the app developer can remedy the situation by republishing the app with the correct Targeted Device Families setting in Xcode.
