Backups fail with "API call failed: There are currently two usable fault domains. The operation requires one more usable fault domains."
We can see in vSphere Client this same error code.
This problem will occur if our vSAN Cluster goes down to two nodes or lower.
Snapshots cannot be created if the vSAN Cluster has less than three fault domains.
VMware allows the definition of three fault when configured, but recommends a minimum of four domains for best protection. Three fault domains do not support certain data evacuation modes.
At least three Fault Domains need to be online in order to create snapshots.
You can review your Fault Domains using vSphere Client | Host and Clusters View | Select the Cluster | Manage Tab | Settings Sub-tab | Select Fault Domains.
Please review the following VMware document for more information: Designing and Sizing Virtual SAN Fault Domains.
