System Requirements

System Requirements

Foglight Resource Optimizer comes installed on Foglight for Virtualization, Enterprise Edition. The following cartridges are required for data collection:

  1. DRP-5_6_16.car
  2. OptimizerAutomation-5_6_16_1.car
  3. CommonAnalytics-5_6_16_1.car
  4. Virtual-VMware-5_6_16_1.car
  5. Virtual-VMware-Admin-5_6_16.car
  6. Optimizer-5_6_16_1.car
  7. VMware-Optimizer-5_6_16_1.car
  8. ChangeAnalyzer-5_6_16_1.car (recommended)

 

For information about system requirements for this release, refer to the "Hardware Requirements and Guidelines" section in the System Requirements and Platform Support Guide for the product you have installed.  

Before installing Foglight Resource Optimizer, ensure your system meets the following minimum hardware and software requirements.

 The platform, memory, and hard disk space requirements for the monitored servers must match the Agent Manager requirements. For complete information, see the System Requirements and Platform Support Guide.
Operating System Foglight Resource Optimizer can be installed on any supported Foglight Management Server or Foglight for Virtualization, Enterprise Edition configuration.

Product Licensing

Product Licensing

Foglight includes a licensing capability that restricts access to those features that are defined in the license. Any Management Server installation requires a license that grants access to server-specific parts of the browser interface and the features associated with them. Foglight cartridges are also license-protected. While some cartridges are covered by the base Foglight license (such as Foglight Agent Manager cartridges and Foglight for Infrastructure), others may require an additional license. Foglight Resource Optimizer is covered by the base Foglight for Virtualization Enterprise license.

To activate a trial or a purchased commercial license:

  1. On the navigation panel, under Dashboards, click Administration > Setup & Support > Manage Licenses.
  2. Click Install.
  3. In the Install License dialog box, click Browse.
  4. In the file browser that appears, specify the location of the license file.
  5. In the Install License dialog box, click Install License.

Installing this Patch

Installing this Patch

Install this patch on a system running Foglight for Virtualization, Enterprise Edition 8.3, or to update a cartridge included in Foglight Resource Optimizer 5.6.16 already installed on a Foglight Management Server.

To install this patch:

  1. On the Cartridge Inventory dashboard, install the following cartridge files. Do not remove the older version of these cartridges. Install the new versions over the older versions. The sequence of cartridge installation is important because of their dependencies.
    Note: For cartridge installation instructions, see “Installing Foglight cartridges” in the Foglight Administration and Configuration Help.
    1. OptimizerAutomation-5_6_16_1.car
    2. CommonAnalytics-5_6_16_1.car
    3. Virtual-VMware-5_6_16_1.car
    4. Optimizer-5_6_16_1.car
    5. VMware-Optimizer-5_6_16_1.car
    6. ChangeAnalyzer-5_6_16_1.car (recommended)
  2. Navigate to the Agent Hosts dashboard and deploy the VMware-Performance-64bit-Agent-Installer agent package to the existing Foglight Agent Manager hosts.
  3. Navigate to the VMware Environment dashboard and open the Administration tab.
  4. On the Administration tab, in the Agents area, observe the contents of the Agent Version column for all of the existing VMware Performance Agent instances. All agent entries should display Version Up To Date in this column.
  5. If agent.manifest has been previously edited to support larger environments, deactivate all agents where these changes were applied. This is needed because the update process overwrites the agent.manifest file, and it needs to be edited.
  6. For any agent hosts that have agents monitoring more than 4000 VMs, edit the JVM memory settings in the agent.manifest file using the following formula:
    Number_Of_VC * 512 MB + Number_Of_VMs * 0.5 MB/VM

  7. Activate any agents that were deactivated in step 5.
  8. If you completed step 5 through step 7, restart the Foglight Agent Manager.

Determining if this Patch is Installed

To determine if this patch is installed:

  1. On the navigation panel, under Dashboards, click Administration > Cartridges > Inventory.
  2. On the Cartridge Inventory dashboard, review the list of installed cartridges.
  3. If you find the following cartridge versions in the list, this patch is installed:
    • ChangeAnalyzer 5.6.16.1 (optional)
    • CommonAnalytics 5.6.16.1
    • Optimizer 5.6.16.1
    • OptimizerAutomation 5.6.16.1
    • Virtual-VMware 5.6.16.1
    • VMware-Optimizer 5.6.16.1
