Affected Product & Version – NetVault: Backup 8.x
Affected Module & Version – VMware Plugin 1.x
OS Version – Windows Platforms
Application Information – ESX 3.5 and greater
Description:
Virtual Machine (VM) image restores via VMware Consolidated Backup (VCB) proxy could timeout due to slow response from the ESX server to VMware Converter commands.
Symptoms:
The Restore job will fail with the following errors in the binary log:
Warning Failed with exit code 1
Error Output from program ‘[VMWare Converter path]\p2vTool.exe’
Error Failed to restore [VM name]
The context of the “Output” message shows the following:
...failed with error P2VError UNKNOWN_METHOD_FAULT(vim.fault.Timedout)
VMware Converter logs on the VCB proxy Windows server during the restore process will show the following:
[#1] [2010-11-24 12:30:17.273 'App' 2356 verbose] [rpcConnectionWrapper,849] Waiting for a task to complete...
[#1] [2010-11-24 12:45:23.202 'App' 2356 error] [managedVMCreator,1033] CreateVm task failed: Operation timed out.
VMware should investigate the root cause of the slow response from the ESX server to VMware Converter commands.
A workaround to enable a restore in the short term would be to modify the Migrate.NetTimeout variable on the ESX server to extend the timeout period.
The Migrate.NetTimeout variable can be modified in the Advanced Settings management window when connected to the ESX server via the vSphere client, in the Migrate section. The default is 20, with a range of 1 to 3600.
Note that this simply masks and works around the root cause and is not considered a solution to the problem.
