Exchange 2010 restore to Recovery Database fails. (4046441)

An attempt to restore an Exchange Server 2010 mailbox database to a Recovery Database (RDB) fails with the following errors -

Failed to Prepare the environment for VSS restore of database 'Database_name\Node_name'
VSS environment not initialized for database 'Database_name\Node_name'
Restore stream close for database 'Database_name\Node_name'

[CAUSE 1]

Undetermined problem with access to an existing RDB for restore.

[CAUSE 2]

RDB is not configured to be overwritten by a restore.

[RESOLUTION 1]

Remove the existing RDB, delete its folder from the Exchange Server's file system, create a new RDB.

New RDBs are created with 'This database can be overwritten by a restore' enabled, and are also in a dismounted state. In these circumstances the RDB is ready to be restored to immediately.

[RESOLUTION 2]

• On the Restore Options tab of the restore job enable Set 'This database can be overwritten by a restore' flag"

or

• On the database properties screen in the Exchange Management Console, under the maintenance tab place a tick in the box for This database can be overwritten by a restore.
