Not all Microsoft patches are designed to install successfully while an Office Suite application is active or if there is at least one service running in the background. In a few cases this year, several patches have been identified as causing issues with the application after deployment and a 2nd or 3rd attempt has been necessary in order for the patch to successfully install.
There have been two possible side effects noticed when this occurs:
1. More than one instance of the same patch shows as installed on the client system.
2. The application crashes when trying to open or use after the patch was deployed.
At this time, there has only been a small handful of Microsoft patches expressed as showing either one of these outcomes both through and outside of the KACE appliance. It his highly recommended to make sure the Office Suite applications and all of their services are not running when applying a Microsoft Outlook update to avoid either one from taking place.
If you find you are in a situation where crashes take place after the fact or the KACE appliance lists the patch as NOT PATCHED, deploying the patch more than once for a successful install and have it listed more than once is the best resolution if a rollback is not possible with the patch. If the patch has been superseded it is also recommended to deploy the superseded patch to clean up whatever issue its predecessor has caused.
