Upgrading Foglight Evolve

The Foglight Evolve components (Management Server, Embedded Agent Manager, Cartridges) are all upgraded automatically by the Foglight Evolve installer.

To upgrade Foglight Evolve from Foglight for Virtualization, Enterprise Edition or a previous version of Foglight Evolve:

Download the Foglight Evolve installation package for your platform from the Support Portal.

Manually shut down your Foglight Management Server. Do not depend on the installer to shut down your running Management Server and/or embedded database, due to the timing problem. Ensure that the Management Server has stopped running before launching the Foglight Evolve installer. To verify that all Management Server processes have stopped, type the following command:
Windows®:
tasklist /v | find "fms"
Linux®:
ps -C fms

IMPORTANT: If your Management Server uses an external database, do not stop the database. It is important that it continue to run during the upgrade.

For extra reliability, you must back up the Foglight database, as recommended in the Administration and Configuration Help.

Upgrade the existing Foglight for Virtualization, Enterprise Edition or Foglight Evolve installation using the appropriate installer. Follow the on-screen instructions in the installation wizard.

IMPORTANT: If you have previously installed Foglight for Virtualization, Enterprise Edition or Foglight Evolve in a custom location, select the Custom Install option. You must specify the same installation directory as used for the existing installation.

The installer detects the earlier version of Foglight for Virtualization, Enterprise Edition or Foglight Evolve.

Follow the on-screen upgrade instructions.
Select Upgrade and click Next.

The upgrade process continues in a similar fashion to the installation. For step-by-step assistance, refer to the appropriate Foglight Installation and Setup Guide for the database and platform you are running.

NOTE: The database upgrade may be time consuming if you have a large topology.

After the Foglight Evolve application is upgraded, the licensed cartridges are upgraded automatically.

NOTE: When upgrading Foglight Evolve from Foglight for Virtualization, Enterprise Edition, the license that is provided to the existing users must be updated.

Upgrading Foglight Evolve License

After upgrading Foglight Evolve from Foglight for Virtualization, Enterprise Edition, the license must be updated. To update the product license, do the folowing:

Install the Foglight Evolve Core License. Refer to Install licenses in Foglight Administration and Configuration Guide for detailed information.

Install Foglight Evolve feature license, which includes Foglight Evolve Cloud, Foglight Evolve Monitor, Foglight Evolve Operate, and Foglight Evolve Flex license. Refer to Foglight Evolve Release Notes for detailed license matrix.

Remove old Foglight for Virtualization, Enterprise Edition license.

Upgrading the Agent Manager

Backing up custom JRE certificates before upgrading Agent Manager

When upgrading external Agent Manager, if the new Agent Manager uses a higher version JRE than the old Agent Manager, the JRE TrustStore (caserts) in the old Agent Manager will be replaced by the new TrustStore from the higher version JRE. This will cause all the custom certificates imported to the old JRE TrustStore by customers get lost after the Agent Manager upgrade.

To keep the custom certificates, you need to back up the old JRE TrustStore before upgrading external Agent Manager, by following below steps:

Verify if the new Agent Manager uses a higher version JRE than the old Agent Manager.

If yes, copy the file <fglam_home>/jre/<current_jre_version>/jre/lib/security/cacerts to a local directory before upgrading Agent Manager.

After Agent Manager is upgraded, replace the cacert TrustStore with the copied cacert TrustStore and restart Agent Manager.

As for the embedded Agent Manager, it uses the same JRE as the Management Server. If there are custom JRE certificates stored in JRE TrustStore and a higher JRE version is used, back up the JRE cacert TrustStore used by the Management Server before upgrading Management Server.

NOTE: If the new JRE TrustStore has different entries than the old JRE TrustStore, there is a risk that these entries would get lost after replacing with the old JRE TrustStore.

The embedded Agent Manager is updated as part of the upgrade process. Any additional, external Agent Managers may need to be updated.

On the navigation panel, under Dashboards, click Administration > Agents > Agent Managers.
The Agent Managers dashboard lists all agent hosts currently connected to the Foglight Evolve server. If an agent host is not connected, start the Agent Manager process on that host.

If the Version of any agent host listed is not 6.0.0, continue following this procedure to upgrade the Agent Manager.
Otherwise, see the Appendix: Deploying an agent package using the browser interface.

To upgrade, select the agent host from the list and click Upgrade. The process may take a few minutes and the agent host may disappear from the list temporarily while it is restarting.

NOTE: Repeat the upgrade process for every agent host that is not at version 6.0.0 or prior.

In some cases the upgraded Agent Manager may fail to restart after upgrading, and report as failed. If this happens, manually start the Agent Manager on the remote host.

NOTE: If you are upgrading from Management Server version 5.2.4, an Agent Manager and Guest Process agent do not yet exist. For information on how to install and configure the Agent Manager, see the Agent Manager Guide.

Upgrading Foglight Evolve agents

After upgrading Foglight Evolve, the database, and cartridges, the agents used by some of the cartridges must be updated to ensure proper data collection. Specifically, this section describes the procedures for upgrading monitoring agents.
