Moving the System Cache contents to a new location (4286001)

Symptom

This is a requirement driven by client needs, mostly due to changes in storage hardware, such as the implementation of a NAS device.

A determination is made that the physical location of the System Cache needs to be moved from one location to another.

1. Open Central Administration > Application Management > Storage profiles, change the Externalize content BLOBs setting to "No" for each StoragePoint profile. NOTE: This will require an IISRESET and Timer Job Service restart across all WFE servers in the farm.

   

2. On the Storage Profiles page, click Jobs for each StoragePoint profile, and set the Unused BLOB Cleanup job to "Never".

   

3. On the Monitoring > Timer Job Definitions page, disable the following StoragePoint Timer Jobs:
   • StoragePoint Capacity Monitor
   • StoragePoint Content Migration
   • StoragePoint License Verification
4. Prepare the new System Cache by creating a folder and ensuring it has the same permissions and sharing settings as the old System Cache.
5. Copy all contents from the old location to the new location (e.g. \\sql08r2-1\SystemCache to \\SPINDEX2010\SystemCache).
6. On the Application Management > System cache page, change the path value to the UNC specification for the new location, then click Test Storage Settings. If the test is successful, save the settings.
7. On the Storage Profiles page, change the Externalize content BLOBs setting to "Yes" for all profiles. NOTE: This will require an IISRESET and Timer Job Service restart across all WFE servers in the farm.
8. Re-enable each of the disabled Timer Jobs and reschedule the Unused BLOB Cleanup job for each StoragePoint profile.
9. If any content that was added to the content database has been externalized during the time externalization was disabled, run the BLOB Externalization job for each StoragePoint profile.
10. To ensure that the maintenance was completed successfully, run the BLOB Health Analyzer for each StoragePoint profile to scan for any missing BLOBs.
