ODM Email Migration Fails: “Mailbox provision failed due to the timeout limit was exceeded”
Description
ODM cannot migrate the mailbox because Microsoft 365 has not completed mailbox provisioning. The log may show:
- Error creating target session: Autodiscover for <email_address> failed; the mailbox may not exist or may not be licensed.
- Mailbox provision failed due to the timeout limit was exceeded.
Cause

The mailbox is stuck in the “We’re preparing mailbox for the user” state in Microsoft 365 Admin Center after being synced from on-premises. This is a Microsoft-side issue, not ODM-related.
Resolution
Verify the mailbox status in Microsoft 365 Admin Center:
- Go to Users > Active Users > [Select User] > Mail tab.
- If the status shows “We’re preparing the mailbox for the user”, wait until provisioning completes.
