NV Version: All
OS Version: Check with vendor to determine if your Filer's OS supports Direct Backup/Restore.
Application version: n/a
Plugin version: Check with BakBone to determine if your software supports Direct Backup/Restore.
Symptoms:
NDMP backup of a Filer is very slow.
Cause of problem:
Performing a Direct Backup of a Filer with the NDMP APM involves a certain amount of overhead, which enables a Direct Access Restore to be performed. This overhead may degrade backup performance.
Direct Access Restore allows, among other things, a single file or directory to be restored without having to read an entire saveset (backup).
If the overhead of performing a Direct backup is causing the amount of time to perform a backup to grow significantly, then disabling Direct Backup may be a solution. On the Backup Options screen disable the following options -
1. Do Direct Backup if Possible
2. Save File Information
WARNING!!! Disabling these options may result in Direct Access Restore, and the ability to select individual items for restore, becoming IMPOSSIBLE. This means an entire saveset (backup) may have to be restored, not individual items, or that the entire saveset (backup) may have to be read to restore a single file. The time to restore will increase significantly. Carefully consider backup and restore requirements before applying any changes to the NDMP backup options.
