Protocol error from VMX appears during Quiesced snapshot in vRanger 5.3.1 and/or vCenter. After upgrading from vRanger 3.x or vReplicator 3.0.x
The Backup and Replication job use to work fine on vRanger 3.3.x and vReplicator 3.0.x and only started after the upgrade to version 5.3.1. Go into services on the VM that you are backing up or replicating to see if the Vizioncore VSS adapter is running. If it is running, stop the service, go into properties set it to disabled, then restart the VMware tools service.
Stop the Vizioncore VSS adapter service, disable the service, and restart the VMware tools service.
If vRanger 3.x or vReplicator 3.0.x is still installed, the VSS adapter can be uninstalled.
vRanger 3.x:
Go to Configure
Install VSS
Select the VM's that have the VSS adaptor installed and from the drop down Uninstall VSS
Click Start and this will remove the Vizioncore VSS adaptor
vReplicator 3.0.x:
Go to tools
Click on VSS Options
Select the VM's that have the VSS adaptor installed and from the drop down Uninstall VSS
If the old vRanger and vReplicator are no longer available, you can manually remove the Vizioncore VSS adaptor:
Go to the %windir%\Temp\vzVscs\vzVscsService.exe and delete this folder.
Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\vizioncore VSS Adaptor
Delete this Key
Reboot the VM.
