A review of Retention in vRangerPro DPP.
How retention works is you set your save points or "points in time you would like to restore back to" and then set your threshold for when the next full will be ran.In the example below of a Diff if you set your save points to 7 and your threshold to 6 the backup will operate as shown. The X's represent delete save points, F=Fulls, D=Differentials
FULLS and DIFFERENTIALS
Week one
FDDDDDDF
Then retention executes after the following full. Which would look like the example below:
Week Two
FXDDDDD FD
As you can see the differential for day 2 was created and the following week’s day 2 was deleted.
The full backup will stay with the complete set in till day 7's Diff backup has been run. On that day it will delete the last differential backup along with the day one full backup
As shown in the example below
Week Two day 7 before retention
FXXXXXDFDDDDDD
On day 7 this is what you will see after retention
XXXXXXXFDDDDDD
As you can see you always at minimum keep 7 save points.
FULLS and INCREMENTALS
Incremental on the other hand has to keep a complete set in order to operate.
In the example below Saves points set to 7 incremental thresholds set to 6
Week One
FIIIIII
Week two before retention
FIIIIIIFIIIIII
Week Two after retention, as you can see there is always at minimum 7 save points left
FIIIIII
In the examples the differences is that a differential will delete data as it progresses though the week, unlike incremental what will only remove data once another set has completed.
