Is the vRanger Virtual Appliance (VA) compatible with VMware's paravirtualized Network Adapters? When the virtual machine's Virtual Hardware Version is upgraded to Hardware Version 7 or 8, the paravirtual "vmxnet2" and "vmxnet3" adapters are not visible as a possible choice when attempting to change the virtual network adapter on the vRanger VA. VMWare encourages the use of these adapters when possible, so why are they not selectable as a choice?
N/A
Answer: The paravirtual adapters (vmxnet2 and vmxnet3) are currently NOT supported by the Virtual Appliance. The reason for this is that the "flavor" of Linux that the VAs are based upon currently does not support the use of any paravirtual adapters when running on a Virtual Machine. It is still adviseable (for performance reasons), if you have converted the VA virtual machine to Virtual Hardware Version 7 or later, also to convert the virtual network adapter to the available "E1000" virtual adapter. This adapter is fully supported by the OS of the Virtual machine.
Support for the paravirtual adapters is being discussed as a potential future included feature in the Virtual Appliance build.
