When attempting a backup of a VM with vRanger 6.0.1 it fails immediately with:
"Error Message: Object Reference is not set to instance of object"
A possible cause of this error is that the minimum space needed on host setting exceeds the actual free space that exists on the host where the VM resides.
This setting is the additional space required in the datastore to allow for snapshot growth during the backup process. If the space allocated is exceeded during a backup, virtual machines on the datastore will power down and data loss may occur.
1. In vRanger, navigate to Tools | Options | My Jobs - Configuration
2. In the 'Space needed on hosts' pane, observe the setting 'Minimum space needed on hosts (GBs)'; if this setting exceeds the actual free space then this is the cause.
3. Lower this setting to the default of 6GB or lower if necessary.
