How to setup notifications in the diagnostic console
Connect to a server, select the View Menu, Options, Alarm Log and select the Action Rules icon. Then click the New button, supply the Condition, Select the Action (this would be Send e-mail to... and then the Rules Description. Spotlight will have to be left running for email to be sent.
Spotlight does not use SMTP servers for sending email; it uses MAPI This is why Outlook must be installed, configured with a MAPI profile and logged on. When Spotlight Alert spawns email, it will use the Outlook profile to send on it's behalf. If Outlook is not running and an Alert is spawned, then Spotlight is going to launch just the Mail Profile dialog box so a profile can be selected to send the email from. If all Security patches from Microsoft have been applied to Outlook then another dialog box is going to come up after the Mail Profile dialog box requesting approval to allow the profile to send on behalf of Spotlight.
A feature request has been logged to enable the use of SMTP.
