When making changes to the options in Toad Data Point or Toad for SQL Server and pressing OK, the following message appears:
'Failed to save application settings.'
Editing options doesn't save to the settings.xml file
This happens even if user permissions show that read/write control is granted to the folder where the settings.xml file is.
This can happen when saving to a profile on a mapped network drive and you launch Toad Data Point with the datadir parameter in the shortcut, e.g.
C:\Program Files (x86)\Quest Software\Toad Data Point 3.5\toad.exe" -datadir=\\servername\test
This may also occur when -datadir parameter in the shortcut is set to the "H:\Home" mapped drive, even if the drive has full read/write access.
Another situation this error may occurs in Toad for SQL Server is when the settings.xml file already exists under “...\AppData\Quest Software\Toad for SQL Server 6.7" in a Terminal Server environment.
It may also be due to a corruption in the Program Files and require a reinstall.
STATUS:
These issues are fixed in the latest Toad Data Point and Toad for SQL Server versions. The latest version for Toad Data Point can be downloaded here, while the latest Toad for SQL Version can be downloaded through this link.
WORKAROUND 1:
1. In Toad, go to Help | About. Click the "Application Data Directory" link. This will open the settings folder that Toad Data Point is referencing.
(Default directory for settings is c:\Users\\appdata\Roaming\Quest Software\Toad Data Point )
2. Exit Toad.
3. Rename the settings.xml file.
Back in Toad, make a change to the Toad Data Point options and click OK. A new settings.xml file is created with the correct options. Restart Toad and verify the setting and issue again.
WORKAROUND 2:
Ensure the user profile is on a local drive. Remember to adjust the target field in the shortcut if needed.
WORKAROUND 3:
If issue is due to a corruption and not related to the network drive or datadir setting the target, please uninstall and reinstall Toad Data Point. Upgrading to newest version is suggested.
To uninstall, go to Window's Add/Remove Program. Make sure you have Windows admin privileges that allow for installation.
WORKAROUND 4:
Run the application "as Administrator" and try to save settings again.
