Support for XML type. Unable to view or edit the contents of XML field for XMLTYPE in Schema Browser or SQL Editor window.
The Oracle Client, when in the Unicode mode, does not support DML statements on XML data which is longer than 4000 characters. Hence, editing of XMLTYPE is no longer supported after Toad 10.x due to the added support for Unicode.
WORKAROUND:
1. Download a 3rd party external XML Editor.
2. Add the external XML Editor from View | Toad Options | Executables - browse for the XML Editor executable in the XML Editor field.
3. In order to save changes to database, once data is changed via XML Editor, copy and paste data into an Update/Insert statement to be executed in Toad.
For Unicode support a few things have happened.
First, we lost the ability to edit XML data types on the database. This is beyond our control.
Second, our old XML parser allowed us to know where in the XML certain elements and attributes occurred. This allowed us to navigate to the character offset in the Editor when the user clicked on an item on the left side. That parser did not support Unicode.
A standard XML parser is in use now which uses the msxml.dll included with Windows (maybe with IE) and it uses XMLDom. It is for parsing (reading and writing) XML, but does not include the ability to navigate to the character offset where an element or attribute occurs in the document.
These factors resulted in us pulling it out.
