I use Toad to connect to a database where I expect to get disconnected frequently by idle timeout. After being timed out, I try to exit out of Toad by selecting File | Exit or by clicking the X icon at the top right corner. Toad will display a message error message "ORA-2396: exceeded maximum idle time, please connect again." I click OK but Toad but will not exit. I try to exit several times before Toad finally quits or I have to reconnect to the database first and then exit.
This issue was more frequent in older versions of Toad. If you upgraded to a newer version of Toad and migrated old files over the problem could remain.
WORKAROUND:
The following steps will reset the user settings to default.
1. Shut down Toad.
2. Browse to the directory C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\Quest Software\Toad for Oracle\10.6
3. Locate the folder "User Files" rename it to "User Files BACKUP"
4. Launch Toad, when prompted to migrate old settings, please select No
5. Enter your connection information, check "Save Password."
6. Connect to your database.
To restore your connection files:
1. Shut down Toad.
2. Browse to the directory C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\Quest Software\Toad for Oracle\10.6\User Files BACKUP
3. Copy the files connections.ini, connectionpwds.ini, and SavedSQL.dat from User Files BACKUP into the new User Files folder.
4. Launch Toad and your connection information will be restored.
