Description

Connecting to HIVE, one may see the error:
Row size too large. The maximum row size for the used table type, not counting BLOBs, is 65535. This includes storage overhead, check the manual. You have to change some columns to TEXT or BLOBs
Query: select * from TABLE_NAME ...
Resolution

Toad Data Point native Hive provider has this restriction. To reduce the row length do not chose all columns (*) in your query.
Also, this is a limitation of the native Hive connector. The MapR ODBC driver will not have this issue. One may use this within TDP and see if that connector works better. It may seem slower, but does not have that limitation nor the fully qualified issue.
