Not able to export data to a .xlsm file that does not yet exist and is created during export

When exporting data, if the file that the data is exported to is a .xlsm file that does not exist yet, it will not work.  Instead, it creates a .xlsx file, which the data is exported to.  When trying to open the .xlsx file, it gives an "Excel cannot open the file <file_name> because the file format or file extension is not valid. Verify that the file has not been corrupted and that the file extension matches the format of the file" error and the file will not open.  

Exporting data to a .xlsm file that already exists works fine.
