Spotlight on SQL Server monitors the activity of SQL Server instances in your enterprise. When a Spotlight alarm is raised an incident report can be sent to a single PagerDuty service. Spotlight updates the PagerDuty incident when the alarm severity level changes in Spotlight or the alarm is snoozed or acknowledged in Spotlight. When the alarm is acknowledged or resolved in Spotlight the incident is resolved in PagerDuty. The reverse is not true, so if the incident is acknowledged or resolved in PagerDuty then Spotlight will not receive that information. Use this guide to integrate Spotlight with PagerDuty.

Integration requires Spotlight on SQL Server 11.5 or above.

In PagerDuty:

  1. Log in to your PagerDuty account. Configure an API access key to create an authentication for Spotlight to use to send alarm notifications to your PagerDuty account. Select Configuration | API Access.

  2. On the PagerDuty API Access Keys page, provide a Description for the API Access Key and click Create Key.

  3. On the PagerDuty API Access Keys page, take note of the API Key for later use (in Spotlight).

  1. Create a PagerDuty service for Spotlight to send alarm notifications to. Select Configuration | Services.

  2. From the Services page, click Add New Service.

  3. Create a name for the service. Assign an escalation policy. Select Use our API directly. Click Add Service.

  4. On the PagerDuty service page (for Spotlight on SQL Server Enterprise), take note of the Service API Key for later use (in Spotlight).


In Spotlight on SQL Server:

Configure PagerDuty

In the Spotlight Client:

  1. Click Configure | Diagnostic Server.

  2. Select Configure PagerDuty.
  3. Specify your PagerDuty account details: API Access Key and Service API key.
  4. Click Trigger Test Incident to verify Spotlight can successfully send an alarm notification to PagerDuty.


Configure Alarm Actions

Define the conditions requiring Spotlight to send an incident report to PagerDuty.

In the Spotlight Client:

  1. Click Configure | Alarm Actions.

  2. Click New to create a new rule or select a rule and click Modify.

  3. In the alarm action editor, give the rule a meaningful name. Apply conditions such as the name of the alarm, the severity of the alarm, the alarm type, the connection type, the date of the week and the time of day. In the actions to perform, select Send PagerDuty Incident. A PagerDuty incident is sent to the PagerDuty dashboard when all conditions for this rule are met.

  4. Return to the Alarm Action Editor. Create as many rules as are appropriate to your organization. All the actions in the rule are executed when all the conditions in the rule are met. Rules are executed in the order they are listed in the Alarm Action Editor. Move rules up and down to re-organize them.

In PagerDuty:

Congratulations! You have integrated Spotlight on SQL Server with your PagerDuty account. PagerDuty incident reports contain valuable information to facilitate quick resolutions of your alarms. The PagerDuty incident is updated automatically when the alarm severity changes in Spotlight or the alarm is snoozed or acknowledged in Spotlight. When the alarm is acknowledged or resolved in Spotlight the incident is resolved in PagerDuty. Note that the reverse is not true: acknowledge and resolve actions on the PagerDuty web site do not update the Spotlight application.
