Deadlocks Detected alarm

The Deadlocks alarm becomes active when a deadlock occurs in a database or partition. A deadlock is created when two applications lock data they both need. A high number of deadlocks is a sign of resource contention.

Default thresholds are defined so that one deadlock raises a Medium severity alarm. You can adjust thresholds to suit your environment using the Metric Editor.

What you can do

  • View the Client Application Analysis drilldown to determine which applications are encountering deadlocks.
  • Check for problems that cause deadlocks and resolve them. These problems include:

    • Applications that are locking tables explicitly when system-generated row locks are sufficient.
    • Applications that are using an inappropriate isolation level during the bind process.
    • Applications that are obtaining identical locks in different orders.
    • Lock escalations in the database.
    • Catalog tables that are locked for repeatable reads.
