NetVault Backup support policies

Quest’s Product Lifecycle and Support Services Guidelines detailing End-of-Support-Life (EOSL) procedures for all product lines are available online.

The naming convention used in this policy topic follows the standard product release versioning scheme of (Major.Minor.Maintenance.Patch). Quest provides full support of current (n) and prior (n-1) versions of NetVault Backup. These versions, n and n-1, are defined as major feature releases. Quest targets releasing one major NetVault Backup feature release every 12 to 18 months with several maintenance releases between feature releases. Actual release plans are subject to change. This information provides general guidance to help you with future upgrade planning and does not imply actual release timeframe commitments.

Quest offers an Early Adopter (EA) Support level for NetVault Backup with applicable qualifications. For the supported combinations, see the various tables within this guide.

Early Adopter (EA) Support:

Additional support definitions used throughout this guide might include:

Also, an individual manufacturer’s End-of-Life (EOL) and EOSL product-support policy and statements supersede any support implied directly or indirectly by the information within this guide.

In addition to what is listed in this guide, Quest provides NetVault Backup support for host operating systems and applications where the following criteria have been met:

If a Support Request (SR) concerns a supported NetVault Backup product, application, or OS platform release combination per this guide, but the vendor no longer supports the application or OS, Quest only provides BRE support for issues that Quest determines pertain to that vendor’s application or OS. In this scenario, the vendor is not expected to assist, and Quest recommends that you upgrade to a supported NetVault Backup and application or OS version combination.

A NetVault Backup application plug-in’s limited-support start date and EOSL date are the same as the latest major or minor NetVault Backup version it is supported with per this guide. Each fully supported version of NetVault Backup limits Full Support of a plug-in version to n and n-1 major plug-in releases as determined by n; in this case, n is the latest major plug-in version supported by that NetVault Backup major release. After a major plug-in release becomes n-2, it enters LS for one year. After the one year passes, the plug-in reaches EOSL and support is discontinued for that plug-in version.

NetVault Backup Server and Client components are supported when running in a virtual machine (VM) as long as NetVault Backup is running in a hypervisor guest OS that is officially supported by NetVault Backup. Supported hypervisor programs are: KVM, Hyper-V, Oracle VM server, Virtual Iron, VMware ESXi, and Xen.

Additional notes:

Using the Plug-in for FileSystem on the physical hypervisor server machine to perform image-level backups of the VM is not supported. Installing the Plug-in for Hyper-V or Plug-in for VMware on the physical machine to perform image-level backups of the VM is required.

Processor types and bit modes

The following table explains the nomenclature used throughout this guide to represent various types of architecture. When the processor supports both 32- and 64‑bit operating systems and applications but a specific bit mode is required, the bit mode is called out in parentheses; for example, x86‑64 (64‑bit).

PowerPC 32/64

32‑bit and 64‑bit architecture that supports 32‑bit and 64‑bit systems and applications

AIX, Mac OS X

x86‑32

32‑bit architecture that supports 32‑bit systems and applications

FreeBSD, Linux, Windows

pure 64‑bit

Pure 64‑bit architecture that supports only 64‑bit systems and applications; also known as pure

FreeBSD, Linux, Windows

x86‑64

64‑bit architecture that supports 32- and 64‑bit systems and applications; also known as hybrid

FreeBSD, Linux, Windows

32‑bit architecture that supports 32‑bit systems and applications and 64‑bit architecture that supports 32‑bit and 64‑bit systems and applications

Linux, Solaris Intel, Windows

SPARC, SPARC 32/64

Based on an architecture developed by Oracle Corporation.

32‑bit and 64‑bit SPARC architecture that supports 32‑bit and 64‑bit systems and applications

Solaris SPARC

SPARC pure 64‑bit

64‑bit SPARC architecture that supports 32‑bit and 64‑bit systems and applications
