PageClientTime

This metric shows the amount of time spent on the client side of the network during a page download. It can also be thought of as the amount of time required during page downloads that is not the responsibility of the web server.

This metric includes:

When responding to the request for a web page, a server transmits many packets to the client that are processed by the client, and then acknowledged.

The response generated for a request is transmitted back to the client in one or more blocks. Each block of data sent to the client must be acknowledged by the client before the server sends the next block. Often, the client must do some processing of the data it received before it can send an acknowledgement back to the server. Once all of the blocks sent by the server have been acknowledged by the client, the page download is complete.

Page Processing Time is the amount of time the server spends processing the request and building the response.

A very simplified example consists of, a page request that consists of a single packet (for example GET /index.html) and a response that also consists of a single packet. Page Client Time is 0 since there are no intermediary transmissions and acknowledgments between the client and server required.

With the vast majority of page download requests, however, there are many additional exchanges between the client and server. Most pages have many page elements (for example, .gif, .css), each of which must be requested by the client, transmitted by the server, and then acknowledged by the client. This metric represents the sum total of all the delays that occur on the network and the client machine during this process.

PageConnectionCount

This metric is the number of TCP connections opened by the client device that is downloading a page. Each page download requires at least one connection to download the initial content. If the page contains additional components (for example Java-Script files, stylesheets, graphics files), additional connections may be used to download those components in parallel.

At the start of each page download, this metric is set to zero. With each additional connection used to download a component for this page, this metric is incremented. This count is incremented whenever a new connection is opened or an old connection is reused to download a component.

PageDownloadAttemptCount

This metric shows the number of page downloads requested by a user. A page download consists of the main component (first component requested), plus any components embedded in the first component. Pages are uniquely identified by the URL for first component in the page download.

This count includes both successfully completed downloads as well as partial downloads. A partial download can occur when the user clicks on the browser’s Stop button before the page has completed its download. For the number of times this happens, see Page Stop Count.

The first component in the page must be downloaded successfully, at least once by at least one user, before the count is incremented. This prevents a hacker from generating an unlimited number of page entries in the database by creating requests for non-existent pages.

This metric is incremented with each page download after the main component for the page has been downloaded successfully by at least one user.

Standard Metric

PageDownloadSize

This metric shows the total number of data bytes needed to download a complete page. A page download consists of the main component (first component requested), plus any components embedded in the first component.

This page download size includes the size of the main component plus the sizes of all embedded components. Pages are uniquely identified by the URL for the first component in the page download.

The first component in the page must be downloaded successfully, at least once by at least one user, before the size is updated. This check prevents invalid entries from being created in the Page category when hacker attacks generate requests for non-existent URLs.

Assuming the download is not aborted, the page size does not vary unless the content itself is changed such as the addition or removal of page components. However, page downloads that are stopped early can cause variation in the page size mean and minimum values. The maximum value should always represent the size when all of the components in the page are downloaded and only change when the content itself is updated.

Page download size is calculated by adding together the size of all components that are downloaded as part of the page.
