Spotlight does not filter the criteria for long running query
Description
After adding a phrase in the (Do not raise an alarm for certain values) section for the alarm "SQL - Long Running SQL", the alarm is still raised.
Cause
Currently only the SPID is accepted in the Ignore Value list.
Resolution
WORKAROUND
Phase 1:
1. Go to Configure | Alarms. 2. Select the SQL Server from the drop-down list. 3. Double-click the alarm "SQL - Long Running SQL". 4. Un-check the 'Factory settings' check box. 5. Replace the description text using the following text:
Session {{KEY_VALUE}} has been executing for {{toDurationFromSec(LongRunningSQL.total_elapsed_time)}}. Hostname: {{LongRunningSQL.hostname}} Program Name: {{LongRunningSQL.programname}} Status: {{LongRunningSQL.status}} Login Name: {{LongRunningSQL.loginname}} Database: {{LongRunningSQL.databasename}} Query Text: {{LongRunningSQL.query_text_short}}
6. Click OK and all dialogue windows.
Phase 2:
Once the alarm triggers the new description details, use the information captured to utilize what keywords you wish to be omitted from alarming in the future. Then proceed to the alarm actions tool to create/modify an alarm action for the alarm "SQL - Long Running SQL" and use the parameter "the details contain any of the following phrases" checkbox to filter using the more descriptive phrases.
1. Go to Configure | Alarm Action. 2. Click New or Modify an existing alarm action that utilizes the Long Running SQL alarm. a. Provide a name for the alarm action if it's new. 3. Check the 'The alarm is' and 'The details contain' checkboxes. 4. Click the red 'alarms' hyperlink in the rule description and select the appropriate alarm. 5. Click the red 'following phrases' hyperlink: a. Leave the 'contains any of the following phrases' radio button marked. b. Click the Add button and enter a phrase from the alarm in phase 1. c. Repeat adding phrases as needed. 6. Click OK.
NOTE: Once tested and works, you are free to use the "Apply Configuration To" button for the modified "SQL - Long Running SQL" alarm to other SQL Servers you are monitoring.
STATUS
Waiting for fix in a future release of Spotlight on SQL Server Enterprise.
