Error connecting to Spotlight Statistics Repository database:
"Invalid connection, Spotlight was unable to connect to database SpotlightStatisticsRepository"
Playback is on the same instance and there are no connection issues with that database. Spotlight client machine can connect to this instance using SSMS.
Resolution

From Views or Reports window select ‘Select Repository’ option. In Instance field, enter fully qualified address of server along with port number, such as xxxx.quest.com\sql2005,1433.
