Mass Mailing Exemption required for Notifications - Could not connect to SMTP host <hostnam -
Description
McAfee Antivirus appears to be preventing SoSSE notifications from reaching our e-mail host. Orgainzation Policy dictates that we provide the server team with a list of the specific program files and the ports used by a given application in order to set an Access Prevention exemption to bypass this malware protection.
We need relevant details for Spotlight on SQL Server Enterprise v7.01 so that we can submit a well formed request in compliance with our organization policy. The error details returned by Spotlight are as follows...Action for alarm 'Services - Service not running' failed : Could not connect to SMTP host: <hostname>, port: 25; nested exception is: Connection refused: connect...we think this is because the McAfee console is set to block Mass Mailing on all servers. To overcome this obstacle, we provide inventory of an application’s program files and the ports they use which are then defined as exemptions to this setting by the server team. For example:SAP: exempt icman.exe on port 25 to allow mail distributionSo, for Spotlight, we need to know what program files (.exe’s and/or /dll’s) are used by the application to send mail, in order to request an exemption as defined above. -
Resolution
The “Quest Diagnostic Server” service (C:\Program Files\Quest Software\Diagnostic Server\Agent\bin\QuestDiagnosticServer.exe -valid for default installation path of the Diagnostic Server) uses port 25 and SMTP protocol for sending notification emails.
Spotlight-client (C:\Program Files\Quest Software\Spotlight on SQL Server\Console\Spotlight.exe - path is valid for default installation of SoSSE7.0.1-client) can email Support information using the same port and protocol.
