Long file names were copied first to the target and they were given a short name that corresponded to another file on the source. Example: Long file name “02.28.2011 LFN Word document for Accounting.pdf” – the short name on the target would be “022820~1.pdf”
When the source file with the same name “022820~1.pdf” is copied to the target, it overwrites the existing long file name.
Microsoft creates corresponding “short” names for every long file name created.
