How to restore a single child domain without having to resort to restoring the whole forest. -
Resolution
This can be done by modifying the Forest Recovery project settings, which are defaulted to "Forest Recovery" model.
Within the project, go to Tools > Recovery Project Settings > Recovery Mode.Change the mode to "Domain Recovery", and then uncheck domains which you don't want to recover.This will change them in the project to "Adjust to active directory changes", which is required to clean up the metadata left over.
