Active Directory - Standard backups uses VSS (Similar to systemstate, see documentation for more info, https://support.quest.com/technical-documents/recovery-manager-for-ad/10.2/user-guide/22#TOPIC-1658827 ) With Baremetal backups, RMAD uses WBAdmin.
During Backup/Restore we are AD aware, the InvocationID will be reset to avoid issues with USN.
With RMAD during Domain or Forest recovery you are recovering all DC's at the same time at a system level. Replication will also take place to ensure all DC's are in sync with each other.
Backups are taken from drives that contain AD system data such as Sysvol, NTDS.dit and logs.
For Granular object level backup, as mentioned above, all critical AD information is within the RMAD backups, including the AD database itself. The Online Restore Wizard can be used to compare and selectively restore single objects to online Domain controllers.
GPO - RMAD backups Group Policy Objects within Standard backups or Baremetal. Users have the ability to run GPO Restore Wizard, which can compare what is in the backup vs. the AD database. You can selectively restore single GPO's or all GPO's as well.
DNS-Integrated Zones. DNS Is backed up as a whole, whether it be a Standard Backups or Baremetal. Since RMAD backups are basically a snapshot of AD's state when the backup was taken, the restore of DNS will also be the exact state after recovery.
