Core service won't start. Error 14001: "The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect" -
Description
Core service is failing to start. Error 14001 is shown with: "The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log or use the command-line sxtrace.exe tool for more detail" -
Cause
Corrupted Core.Service.exe.config file. Potentially caused by custom proxy firewall solution, that is blocking service's connection to the license portal. -
Resolution
To workaround the issue please check the following:
- open CMD in "run as admin" mode
- go to C:\Program Files\AppRecovery\Core\CoreService\ folder
- run core.service.exe /debugThe error message will point to Core.Service.exe.config XML error.
Verify if there are Core.Service.exe.old or .old2 files. Backup the original .config file and rename the most recent .old file to .config. File size should be about 8KB.
Attempt to start the service normally.
For version 6.5 or higher, usage of the Core.Service.exe.config file has been deprecated. If the Core service is failing to start with error 14001, follow these steps:- Install or upgrade .NET Framework to at least version 4.8
- Run Rapid Recovery Core repair installation
Most likely, the system will required to be rebooted by the installation program.
